Janeen and Sweet Pea
|
Janeen McMurtrie was not allowed to have a dog when she was a child. Not satisifed with the succession of rats, guinea pigs, hamsters, snakes and lizards that were her childhood pets, she left home as soon as she turned 18. Janeen got a dog as soon as she was out on her own and for the past 30 years she and her dogs have explored the joys of living and working together.
After years of training her own dogs while pursuing a career as an environmental scientist and listening to friends and family tell her that she should pursue a career in education or an animal-related field, Janeen decided to combine both of her passions together. She completed an apprenticeship program and became a volunteer obedience instructor at Winnegamie Dog Club in Menasha, Wisconsin in 1999. She also taught canine first aid and CPR classes and served on the Board of Directors in the five years that she was a member of Winnegamie Dog Club.
After graduating from the No Limitations School for Dog Trainers in 2002, Janeen started I Get Sit, LLC and began taking on private clients. In 2005 she moved to Red Wing, Minnesota, graduated from That’s My Dog E-cademy and along with partners Zip, Zorro and Sweet Pea started Smart Dogs Training Center LLC. Janeen is a member of the International Association of Canine Professionals (IACP), a Canine Good Citizen Evaluator and an approved Therapy Dogs, Inc. tester/observer. She continues to attend workshops and seminars to stay current with the latest methods and technology in the field of dog training. She has been recognized by her peers in IACP with the President's Award in 2005 and the Member of the Year Award in 2006. |

Janeen uses a wide range of tools and methods in her training program because she feels that every person and every dog is unique and the most important part of the training equation isn’t the tool a person uses; it is the attitude and education of the person using it. One of her goals is to devise a training program for each dog and handler that fits their individual situation. She teaches her students how to be gentle, effective leaders of their dogs using methods that the dogs understand. These include simple things like teaching dogs basic self-control exercises and taking a proactive rather than reactive approach to training.
At Smart Dogs Training Center LLC we focus on teaching you how to communicate effectively with your dog rather than just how to make him obey you. Using both classical and operant conditioning techniques, we show you how to fix behavior problems using our gentle, humane, simple - yet highly effective training methods.
